Crime Statistics: Check Them Online Before Moving to a New Area

Moving to a new area is exciting, and there are many aspects to consider before finding that perfect place to call home. Things like school districts, commute times, and the area’s cost of living all play a part in this decision. But one of the most important things to consider when moving to a new area is the crime rate.

Once you have an area you like, finding the crime rate is fairly simple. You can drive through the neighborhood or talk with neighbors to get a feel for the area. You can also go crime mapping online to find accurate statistics on crime specifically in the area you like. To do this, go online and visit your city’s website (usually found under “City of ---”), or visit the local police department’s website. For example, under the CMPD’s website there is a link labeled “Locate Crime Areas.” This takes you to a virtual map showing icons with specific crime rates in all areas of the city.

There are other online sites that can help you get an accurate idea of the crime rate in your chosen area. Here are a few:

Area Vibes uses an algorithm, which compiles a specific area’s crime rates, employment, education, amenities, cost of living, housing, and weather to provide a Livability Score.

This site works on behalf of your likes and dislikes. Once your “lifestyle preference” is determined, Neighborhood Scout will find areas tailored to you. It can even match a specific neighborhood you like in one area of the country to a similar one somewhere else.

This free website serves every community by locating registered sex offenders in specified areas. This is one you should visit in addition to any others.

There are other helpful websites you can visit before you decide on a neighborhood. Ones like CrimeReports and SpotCrime, are good to use, but the important thing is that you take the time to do this bit of research. You will be glad you did.
